TITLE I MISSION

The purpose of Title I support is to help students:

  • Succeed in regular education programs of the district.
  • Attain grade-level proficiency on district-wide assessments.
  • Improve achievement in basic skills.

In 1st grade children learn to use the pre-reading skills to put it all together and READ!

They need to know all the names of the letters.
They need to put a sound to each of the letters.
They need to know the short vowel sounds as well as the long vowel sounds.
They need to know that words are made of sounds put together in a certain order.
They need to know that letters stand for the sounds and need to be in order.
They need to know that some letters are silent in some words.
They need to start to memorize some words that "cheat" and do not follow the regular patterns.
They need to know that reading must make sense in order to carry the message that the author meant.

IT IS A LOT TO DO!  PLUS THEY NEED TO DO ALL THIS WITH SPEED AND CORRECTNESS!

Here are some web sites that may help you do things at home that improve your first grader's reading skills.
